Moving rooms or residences

What is the room move policy? 

We understand that starting university and moving away from home can be an unsettling period. Our experience shows that the vast majority of our students are very happy with their room once they have moved in, personalised it with their belongings and met their flatmates. For this reason, we do not process requests to move until October and our advice would be that you accept your offer of accommodation to secure your bedspace and move in as planned.

We also do not allow any room changes over Welcome Weekend and the subsequent arrivals period. Students will have been allocated and contracted to all our rooms during the summer. We have to ensure all rooms are ready for their new occupants who could be arriving at any point, so even if another room appears empty it will have been pre-assigned to someone. 

Your room should have been prepared to a suitable standard ahead of your arrival, but if something isn't right then please speak to your Residence Reception so that they can work with you to resolve the issue.

If you wish to request a move:

• Log a request via ??from the beginning of September, once you have completed your University enrolment.
• To do this, go to SID Online and click on "Ask a Question". Search for "Changing room" and you will be taken to the "Changing room or residence" support article. Scroll to the bottom of the page and click "Log Your Question".
• On the next page, choose the Question type 'Accommodation', then the sub-type 'Changing accommodation' and fill in the form. The form will be available from 09:00 on 3 September 2026.
• Please note that as per section 2.6.1 of the?Terms and Conditions of Residence, there is a £50.00 variation fee each time a student moves rooms.  

The process

1. Submit your request following the steps above. Please note - moves will not be processed until October unless for supported medical reasons or you have been allocated to a twin shared room.
2. You’ll receive an email from the Accommodation Team within 5 working days to confirm they’ve received your request. The email will give more information about next steps and how requests will be processed. We will start to work through requests from the specified priority groups first.
3. At the start of October, all other students on the waiting list will be contacted through their SID enquiry, to see if they still wish to move rooms. Room move requests will then start to be processed if there are available rooms. 
4. After we have dealt with requests from the priority groups, student will be randomly selected from the request list if their preferences match the rooms available at that time. Requests are not dealt with on a first come, first served basis.  Therefore, you will only be contacted once a room matching your preferences is available and you are randomly selected from the request list. 
5. During this process, if you need to update us about your request or have particular concerns about your situation, please contact the Accommodation Team.
6. Rooms may become available throughout the year, and as students move rooms to fill these vacancies this can mean that the additional lifestyle preferences we were initially able to meet, can no longer be met. We will, however, keep a flat as single gender as long as there are at least two students residing who requested this preference.

Note for 2026-27 academic year:

We currently have very high levels of occupancy within our residences, and so it will be difficult and slow to facilitate moves between rooms. We will be dealing with priority cases first but currently do not have the availability to deal with these requests. We cannot give any indication as to whether a move will be possible, or how long it might take, as this is entirely dependent on the volume of requests and availability of rooms.
