On Tuesday 6 October, as part of Student Employment Week, we will be hosting the Part-Time Jobs & Volunteering Fair in the Forum Street. 

This fair welcomes companies from a range of sectors, offering opportunities such as casual, part-time and summer work, internships available during term time and vacation periods, as well as volunteering opportunities designed to enhance your undergraduate-level skillset. 

It provides the ideal opportunity to meet and speak informally with organisations about the opportunities available to you.

Student Employment Week provides a great opportunity to come along and chat face to face with the Student Employment Team, as well as lots of our colleagues in the wider Career Zone Team, about the fantastic array of employability schemes and programmes that you can tap into.

Monday 5 October

Understanding Internship Schemes for International Students 

In this virtual session, we will be joined by Rebecca Lenthall and Amanda Searle from the University’s Student Employment Team and Internships Team, to explain and answer your questions about how you can successfully apply for internships with the university while you are studying.  

In this online session, you will learn:  

• The types of part-time and flexible internship opportunities available on campus and with local employers.  
• How to write an effective application and personal statement as an international student, including common mistakes to avoid. 
• What you can do to increase your chances of success at being invited to an interview.

Students attending this workshop will explore differences between cultures and learn about the challenges that these differences can create for effective interaction. They will also be able to share their own experiences and perspective, and working on classroom activities they will develop practical skills that they can apply to academic study, group work and career readiness.

An application form is often the first thing an employer sees in the job application process. Learn how to make a great first impression and write an application form which can help you stand-out. 

In this session we will explore: 

• The purpose of application forms in the recruitment process  
• Tips to prepare before you start the application  
• Tips on how to complete all sections of the form accurately  
• Advice on how to evidence your experience in the personal statement  
• Information on further resources and support

Freelancing is a valuable path to explore if you’re looking for flexibility and autonomy in your career.

In this session we will explore:

• What freelancing involves.​​

• The skills you could offer as a freelancer.​​

• The story of a freelancer.

• Where to find clients.

• Next steps to help you build your confidence in freelancing.

Wednesday 7 October

Whether you're looking to pursue graduate jobs in the UK as an international student, or in China as an overseas returnee, it's important to understand how each job market works, and how to approach it.

This session will give you insights into the graduate jobs market and trends in each country, recruitment timelines, the range of options you can explore, and tips on where to look for graduate jobs. It will also cover postgraduate study, including what's available to you at Exeter, along with timelines and the application process. You'll also get access to useful resources and links.

We will cover:

• The graduate jobs market in the UK as an international student - including job search strategies that leverage the Graduate Route visa, and where to find sponsored roles.
  The graduate jobs market in China as an overseas returnee - including current job market and growth trends, the different types of organisations, and where to find jobs.
  How, when and where to look for jobs, including key recruitment timelines and job platforms.
  Postgraduate study, including what's on offer at Exeter, application timelines, and the application process.

Thursday 8 October

Knowing where to start with a cover letter, it’s purpose and how to make sure it stands out alongside your CV will help you make a great first impression. 

In this session we will explore: 

• The purpose of cover letters 
• How to structure an effective cover letter 
• How cover letters are scored by employers 
• How to make an effective cover letter to maximise your potential in a role 

This session counts towards the Exeter Award. 

Thursday 8 October

If you want to find a job in the UK during or after your studies, you will need to understand how to write an impactful CV and cover letter.

A UK CV may have similarities with other international resumes but it is likely to be different in several key areas. The cover letter is a chance to impress UK employers showing your motivation to apply for that particular role in that particular company.

In this workshop, you will learn:

• What not to include in a UK CV that you might have in your home country resume.
• How to build soft skills into your CV.
• How to explain unrelated experiences or jobs in a way that will impress UK employers (including part time jobs or working for the family business).
• What ATS is and how to make sure your CV scores well.
• An introduction to cover letters and how to write a good one.
• The Dos and Don'ts of using AI to help write your CV or Cover Letter.
• Top tips for  global resumes to ensure that you are well prepared for applications internationally.
